Scott Keogh - CSA Show Presenter

A third-generation horse breaker, as far as Scott Keogh is concerned, he had no choice in his future career – he was born to start and train horses.

There are not too many Australian horseman at his age that can say they have started more than 2000 colts – but in 2018, Scott reached this significant milestone.

While it is an achievement, to Scott, you know you have made it as a horse trainer when some of the most knowledgeable and respected people in the horse industry start sending their young horses to you from far and wide to give them their start under saddle.

“In our industry usually the horse breaker doesn’t get a mention. A few years ago I broke in the Magic Millions two year old race winner. I’ve trained a horse for Badminton Horse Trails in England and one for the Argentine World Polo Open.

“The breaker does the hard stuff at the start, we set the foundations for the rest of the horses’ career, but then you are forgotten.

“A horse breaker hangs his hat on who will send him a horse, so when knowledgeable people send a horse long distances to you – that’s the best pat on the back you can get.”

Scott says the key to his success is that he never stops learning and it is the horses themselves that are his greatest teachers.

He is proud to be a former competitor and now a presenter for Colt Starting Australia.

“There are a lot of Colt Starting events, but as a horse breaker they are not how we would like to see them done,” says Scott.
“This is THE best it is done anywhere in the world. The format we are running puts the horse first. It is not about a trainer’s ego. It is just about starting a horse right.

“I think a lot of people should realise CSA is the cheapest clinic they will ever attend. They get to see the best of the horse breakers showing you their format. Bring a note pad and a pen. It is your chance to go behind the scenes and see what really happens.”
